Most of us belong to one social network or another and you have all your friends there and generally enjoy the experience. But have you considered the true value of the social network you are on and whether it really is the best one for you? It turns out that MySpace and Facebook are the best social networks that are most likely to get you laid so if you are in the market for some good old fashioned human R&R, then those are the two social networks of choice.
Mashable conducted a survey a little while ago to identity the social network most conducive to random sex and found that MySpace is also apparently the best social network to use if you want chlamydia so MySpace comes out on top in two categories. The survey attracted over 500 votes. The votes went as follows:
So, are you using the right social network for you?
While you are in the mood, head over to Tertia’s post and give a contribution if you are in the Cape Town area. This is for men from both sides of the fence so don’t be shy …
I came across this video on YouTube that just blew my mind. For some reason it won’t display in this post so take a look at this video of an artist named Queque instead:
I know very little about the martial arts style known as Capoeira and what little I know I picked up from my friend Bron who studied this for a little while and from the movie The Bourne Identity which has a fighting style that was apparently influenced by Capoeira. I looked it up and found the following on Wikipedia:
Capoeira (IPA: [ka.pu?ej.???]) is a Brazilianmartial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil, starting in the colonial period. Some people believe that capoeira was created in Africa. They say that capoeira originated in Nigerian tribes where they fought with music and the winner won a partner, usually female. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Technique and strategy are the key elements to playing a good game. Capoeira has two main styles, known as "regional" and "Angola."
When I watch this I realise how flexible the human body can be. If ever there was a martial art that is an expression of how fluid and magnificent the human body can be, this is it. Here is another video from a competition or exhibition of some sort:
A husband and wife team has launched a natural remedies business based on Aloe Ferox remedies in Johannesburg. According to the Ilessa website:
Ilian and Vanessa have been searching for years for the right opportunity – one that would help people in terms of improving their health and quality of life, or enable them to make a bit of money on the side to support their incomes, or even to simply be able to start their own sales business. Additionally, the products had to be safe, effective and produce outstanding results – and have no bad side-effects.
They never gave up, knowing that something was out there to fulfill this dream. In 2006, the opportunity arrived and Ilian and Vanessa grabbed it with both hands, registered the company and hence the business was born.
Aloe Dew is one product produced by their friend, Maria Smith. Maria is also able to make anything, from body and bath products to medication, in her laboratories where the products are created and clinically tested.
Zora Touch My Skin, one of Maria’s product ranges, belongs to a lady named Nancy Parris. Ilessa is the sole distributor of the amazing Zora Touch product range in South Africa.
An interesting fact about Vanessa is that she has almost total hearing loss in both ears and in recognition of the plight she shares with so many South Africans, Ilessa will donate 10% of its profits towards South Africa’s Cochlear Implant Fund. For many who have little or no hearing a cochlear implant is the only real chance to regain hearing but the costs remain prohibitively high. Supporting Ilessa is also your opportunity to support this worthy cause.
I have been contemplating my rapidly deteriorating fitness levels (well, fitness in relative terms) and renewed my decision to get back to gym and exercise more than a couple times a month. Eric Allam of 52 Reviews believes that working out is very important for entrepreneurs (well, anyone actually) and sets out his reasons in his post titled "5 Reasons Why Every Entrepreneur Should Workout". The reason that stands out for me is this one:
Health: You can’t run a company if your health isn’t in order. Working out lowers your bad cholesterol, increases good cholesterol, burns dangerous fat, increases your metabolism, lowers your chances of adult diabetes, and a zillion other positive health effects. Really, if you want to die young, don’t work out, I’m sure your employees/family won’t mind when your company/family goes broke.
Pamela Slim has published a fantastic video titled "My declaration of independence" which is an inspiration for small business owners and other people who are self-employed. It is the type of video I would live to download and stick on my iPod for those times I feel a little low. Unfortunately this video is only available as a web-based popup. Her post introducing the video is here.
Pamela’s blog is titled "Escape from Cubicle Nation" is a blog about how to go from a corporate prisoner to a thriving entrepreneur. I was chatting to a colleague the other day about a distinction I came across between being self-employed and being a business owner. Basically being self-employed means you are still working in a job. The difference is that you are the boss. Unfortunately you are still a virtual slave to your job and because you work for youself, you cannot afford to ease off on the pressure. The end result is that you are still the equivalent of what Pamela calls a "corporate prisoner".
My goal is to shift to being a business owner and entrepreneur where the work I do frees me. Pamela’s story is inspiring and illuminates a path that appeals to me:
As soon as I started working for myself, I knew that something was RIGHT! Having my own business was totally liberating and intoxicating. I named my company Ganas (a Spanish word that means the intense desire to do something, inner motivation, exuberance, drive) since that was what I felt every day I went to work, and was how I wanted my clients to feel as a result of working with me. I even went through a phase of self-employment evangelism, encouraging everyone I knew, or didn’t know, to work for themselves, until I learned that not only was it unrealistic since some people like working as an employee, it was downright obnoxious. So although I have toned it down over the years, my zeal for entrepreneurship and my love of working for myself has never waned.
I’ve been thinking about starting yoga classes at my gym for a while now. Almost everyone I know who does yoga raves about their classes and the benefits they experience. After seeing a class like this, I think I could also benefit greatly from this ancient form of exercise and healing. See for yourself:
