Gmail POP access

Those of you who use Gmail probably already know that Gmail can download your email from your POP email accounts. You can use the service to backup your POP mail and make all your mail accessible in one place. That is pretty handy but I am just curious whether mail downloaded by Gmail is marked as read on your POP mail server or whether it is still downloaded as usual. Does anyone have any experience with this?
