Google goes to Mars

200603130907

Well blow me down with a feather and call me 'Susan'!  Google has made it to MarsZDNet has reported on a new Google Maps-like service (actually a lot like Google Moon) with images of the Martian surface:

Tonight I noticed that mars.google.com now has a CNAME record that points to www.google.com.  This usually means that something is about to happen with that subdomain — with the exception of calendar.google.com of course.  So I started digging and you will never guess what I found — a Google Maps type application that lets you view Mars.  This service is called "Google Mars".

The images colour coded by altitude and are very cool!  To find out more, take a look here.

Update:

WorldChanging has a
really nice post on Google Mars that also gives a bit of background info on the expeditions to the red planet.  This post is definitely worth checking out.  Jamais has put quite a bit of work into this one.
