An open letter to Helen Zille about the energy crisis in South Africa

This is an email I sent to Helen Zille, the leader of the Democratic Alliance. Feel free to let Helen know what you think. You can find her contact details here.

Dear Helen (I am assuming that this email will reach Helen Zille)

It seems to me that our energy crisis presents an opportunity to the DA to erode the ANC’s vice-like grip on this country. Although I would like to believe that no clear thinking citizen could not see how the government’s and Eskom’s gross negligence have literally left us in the dark and set us back a number of years in terms of our potential development (leaving aside how little the government has achieved relative to what it could have achieved since 1994), it is more likely that not enough people will see this and vote accordingly in the coming years. Instead, here is a suggestion for the DA: bring power back to the people!

There is much talk about alternative energy sources and private initiatives to introduce these technologies to homes and business across the country. What if the DA reached out to its supporters and sourced the skills, the funding and the connections to facilitate a large scale introduction of alternative power generation systems to those homes and businesses, certainly on a more meaningful and effective scale than Eskom’s initiative to introduce solar heaters to a limited number of homes? Surely actions must speak louder than words and if the DA is able to connect consumers to suppliers and empower those consumers in ways Eskom and this government can’t and won’t, this must translate into enough votes to wrench enough votes out of the ANC’s hands and place them in the DA’s hands and, in the process, make the DA more of a force to be reckoned with and remove the ANC’s ability to rule almost absolutely?

I am not a politician or a participant in the alternative energy market. I am just a guy with a family who has voted for the DA in its various forms since I was old enough to vote in 1994 and who believes in an effective and empowered opposition as a means to keep the majority party in check. I also don’t want to see the lights go out completely in this country.

Just a thought.

Amazon to buy Audible

amazon logo.pngOk, I should really be working but I wanted to mention this tidbit which I found to be pretty interesting. Amazon has said it is buying Audible, a pretty big downloadable audiobook retailer. I wonder how this will impact on Apple both in the greater scheme of things and also because I believe there is an Audible presence in the Apple iTunes Store.

Audible.pngI buy my audiobooks from Audible directly and load them into iTunes for transfer to my iPod. I don’t see Amazon disabling support for iPods in Audible but I wonder how this acquisition will play out. Amazon is going head to head with Apple for market share in the music download biz through Amazon MP3 which is also due to open up internationally later this year.

Clearly Amazon is intent on gunning for Apple in the consumer media space and if the Amazon MP3 service becomes available here in South Africa, legitimately, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over a decision to use that service for my music, especially considering that Apple doesn’t deem us South Africans worthy of the iTunes Store. This deal reminds me of that video that did the rounds a little while ago about the future of the Web and how Google eventually takes over the world as the primary source of all information and knowledge (anyone know where the video is? I can’t find the silly thing). At one point in the video there is talk about Google buying Amazon to form Googlezon … although there is a close tie between Google and Apple so could there perhaps be a three way one day?

Now I am tempted to go buy an audiobook …

It is a bad idea to lie in a presidential campaign

At least that is the case in the United States. Here is a powerful video showing why it is a bad idea to lie to prospective voters in an effort to discredit a rival.

(Source: Larry Lessig’s blog)

Unfortunately lying to voters isn’t unusual in South Africa. The main thing here is to tell the voters what they want to hear, regardless of whether you follow through on your promises. There is little risk of enough voters finding out about your lies and actually holding you accountable so it is all about appearances here.

It reminds me about that joke with a dozen versions: How do you know when a politician is lying? His lips are moving. Very sad.

MacBook Paper - even better than the MacBook Air

So you’ve been wowed by the MacBook Air (or maybe you haven’t) but have you seen the MacBook Paper? The MacBook Paper has an infinite battery life, doesn’t require any sort of data drive and is available in a variety of sizes.
