New version of Skype for the Mac

Skype has launched a new version of Skype for the Mac.  It is currently in beta and is version 1.5.  The look and feel of the new client is a little different and more Mac than the last version.  It takes a few minutes just to see where everything is.  The balance remaining in your account is now at the top of the panel and the toolbar options are not immediately available in the default toolbar (I basically added all my options back).

There doesn’t seem to be support for video conferencing just yet or the ability to record a conversation you have with someone.  I am also not so sure that this version supports Skypecasts which are starting to pop up more and more in the blogosphere.  I may be wrong about that.  The Skype website indicates that version 1.4 and above are required for Skypecasts.

This version is also supposed to integrate better with Address Book and Entourage’s address book.  If you use either or both of these address books, you can search them to add contacts to your Skype contact list.

In all, it is quite a nice facelift and I am looking forward to playing with it and testing is capabilities.

It was bound to happen

YouTube is a little unhappy with porn on its site so it was bound to happen that a video sharing site would pop up to service the huge need for free porn on the Web.  This service goes by the name of, surprise surprise, PornoTube.  Access to the site is free but you have to be a registered member to be able to embed content in your own blogs and play with all the social media stuff on the back end.  Like YouTube, PornoTube supports tagging and gives you info on the number of views videos have had and which videos are top rated.  The content is divided up into straight and gay content and you can browse either category or both, depending on your tastes.

I am a little surprised it has taken so long for this site to pop up and not at all surprised that it has.

The content on the site is not limited to videos.  There are photos and audio files as well, enough to guarantee hours and hours of fun.

Episode 1 of the Jacobson Attorneys podcast is available

It has been almost three months since I mentioned that there would be podcast for this site and I am pleased to announce that tonight saw the launch of the Jacobson Attorneys podcast!

There are two ways to access the podcast.  The first is to simply download the episode and the second is to subscribe to the podcast using your favourite feed reader so you will automatically receive each new episode as it becomes available.  In this first episode I introduce the podcast, talk a little bit about what a podcast is and give you an idea what the big idea is with this newfangled thing.  The download is roughly 3.47MB and is in mp3 format so you can listen to it on pretty much anything.  If you want to, you are welcome to collect a few episodes and burn them to a CD to listen to in your car.  It is up to you.

In short, the feed can be found at http://feeds.feedburner.com/JacobsonAttorneysPodcast.  There are links to the right, in the sidebar, under the header “FEEDS” as well.

I am open to feedback or suggestions.  Please feel free to email your comments to podcast@jacobson.co.za.

So that is what a “touchless” touch screen is!

Like me, you have probably also been reading the odd rumour about the next iPod.  One of these rumours speaks of a “touchless” touch screen.  I couldn’t work out how that was supposed to work until I read this Business 2.0 post:

200607232044
What if the entire surface of your iPod was a screen, and you could wave your fingers over different parts of the screen to call up different controls?  Depending on what you were doing, you could manipulate a virtual scroll-wheel or get a keyboard to pop up. What’s more, you could do this without actually touching the screen or getting it all smudged up.  You could be typing in air just above teh screen, and the movement of your fingers would be causing each key on the screen to enlarge as you “tap” it.

Just such an invention is what Apple describes in a patent application published yesterday.  It describes an input/output system that senses when a finger or stylus is hovering in proximity over the screen.  The sensing could occur any number of ways—from measuring capacitive resistance and changes in the electric field to magnetic, optical, infrared, and acoustic techniques.  Freaky.

I wouldn’t describe that as freaky.  That would make the new iPod cool enough to find the money to buy!!  What I think is freaky is that this technology which is so awesome to us now, will be old news by the end of the decade.

On Vox: Vida e Caffe store in Rosebank

View Paul’s Blog
This is more for my fellow South Africans.  A friend of mine’s brother has opened a new Vida e Caffe store in Rosebank next to the First National Bank across the way from the Rosebank Mall.  The store opened on Friday and this morning was a continuation of the celebrations.

Not just for teenagers sharing with friends

News24 has an article titled “Bloggers ‘exposed’” that discusses blogging and bloggers generally:

Washington - Bloggers are a predominantly young group of internet users who are novice storytellers, enjoy describing their own experiences and have a growing audience in the online world.

A glimpse of this group was put together by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

The survey found that almost one in 10 internet users are bloggers and the audience for this group of online diarists is growing.

Almost four in 10 of the approximately 147 million adult internet users in the United States say they read blogs.

The people they are reading on the online blogs are a young, ethnically diverse group.

They are mostly newcomers to writing - often writing about their own experiences. More than half of bloggers are under age 30.

They were most likely to list their life and events as the most popular topic, followed by politics and entertainment.

The poll findings are based on a sample of 4 573 internet users and a sample from a separate survey of 233 bloggers.

While it is good to see blogging attracting more attention from mainstream media, this article (and many similar articles in mainstream media) doesn’t paint an accurate picture of the blogosphere and the bloggers who contribute to it. Blogs are often described as “online journals” or “online diaries” and while many people use their blogs to document their daily lives, blogs are increasingly being put to use as powerful business tools that facilitate meaningful conversations between businesses and their customers.

Many of the features of blogs that made them so popular as online diaries makes them particularly effective as business communication tools. They enable businesses to post content relevant to their products and services very quickly and to disseminate that content to literally millions of people worldwide. In a way the hype about the Internet in the late 1990s and now is not entirely incorrect. Having a presence on the Web is a way to reach an enormous audience of potential customers. Simply having a blog doesn’t automatically mean your blog will attract all those visitors, just as having a web presence in the 1990s didn’t always live up to the promise of a business in reach of millions online. To succeed you need more than just a blog. You need a service or product people need (just as you always did) and you must let all those potential customers that you have that product or service. A blog makes the latter part a little easier because of the way blogs connect to each other using features like trackbacks and hyperlinks.

Ultimately, if you use it correctly, a blog can become a remarkably effective business tool and not simply a fun thing for your kids to do if they want to show their friends photos of their puppy.
