Now Microsoft stops development on Windows Media Player for Mac OS X

It wasn’t too long ago that I mentioned that Microsoft stopped development on Internet Explorer for the Mac.  Now they have announced they will no longer develop Windows Media Player for the Mac either:

Microsoft says it is no longer developing a Mac version of its Windows Media Player for Mac, following the announcement of a separate five-year agreement with Apple to develop Office for the Mac and Messenger: “We have no plans to provide future updates or product support for Windows Media Player for Mac,” Adam Anderson, Microsoft public relations manager, told CNET News.com. Microsoft said that it had a made a “business decision” to halt development and product support because it was re-examining its business priorities: “Our focus really is in delivering the best experience to Windows customers.” Ironically, the announced followed its public “commitment” agreement to the Mac, but follows an agreement to distribute Telestream’s Windows Media Components for QuickTime.

This irks me and at the same time says a few things about how Microsoft perceives Apple.  Is Apple becoming more of a threat to Microsoft with the announcement of some hot new Intel based Macs?

I saw the Internet Explorer icon in my Applications folder and I started to wonder why I even have it taking up space on my PowerBook.  Anyway, you can download a product by Flip4Mac that will enable you to play unprotected Windows Media content in Quicktime.  If that works properly, who needs Windows Media Player for Mac anyway?

I have one! I have one!

Yesterday was a big day for me.  I bought myself a brand spanking new video iPod and a black one to boot!  Just had to share.  And here is the obligatory picture that shows just how cool it is (borrowed from Infosync World):

Drunken editorial disclaimers

This one is brilliant.  According to the Clarion Ledger (publishing a Washington Post article):

Modern Drunkard, the magazine with the slogan, “Standing up for your right to get falling down drunk since 1996,” published the best editorial disclaimer of the year:

“Views expressed in this magazine do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Modern Drunkard staff or publisher. In fact, I would like to take this opportunity to deny everything. Your honor, I was never even near the place and what’s more, those are not my trousers and those are most assuredly not my friends. They are merely a drunken and surly gang of hitchhikers I made the terrible, terrible mistake of giving a lift. I promise to be good. Really. I swear.”

Steve Jobs really pisses me off!

200601110004

Ok, so it is Macworld, probably one of the biggest events for Mac users all over and true to form, Jobs has unveiled a ton of unbelievably sexy stuff just months after I bought myself this lovable 12inch PowerBook.  I am starting to think I have been singled out for this special kind of torture.  I’m not going to reproduce any of the reports in any real detail (I’m feeling a little nauseous and don’t think I can cope with the rehash of all the news) so take a look at Yahoo! News’ coverage.  In the meantime, here are the highlights:

  • First, there are the new Intel based iMacs that run at up to twice the speed of their G5 equivalents;
  • Next we have the newly named MacBook Pros that run at up to four times the speed of the benchmark 15 inch PowerBook (yikes!);
  • iLife has been upgraded to a ‘06 version (where, of course, everything runs faster and better) and includes iWeb, a blogging and web-services app (I have been hoping for upgrade news for my iLife ‘05 but nothing yet);
  • iWork now has an ‘06 version although there is still no equivalent of Excel (Microsoft is apparently on track to deliver versions of Office for Mac and Messenger that will work on the new Intel machines as well as PowerPC machines);
  • OS X Tiger has a further (and apparently final) incremental upgrade to 10.4.4 (supposed to be released today); and
  • the “iPod Radio Remote is a convenient way for music lovers to skip tracks and adjust the volume of their iPod even when it’s in a pocket or backpack, and listen to FM radio stations while displaying station and song information on their iPod screen”.

New software will now feature a snazzy icon to indicate that it is based on universal binaries (not sure if that is the correct terminology but it means the stuff works on old machines and new hotties).  There is so much more and I wonder how much more will still emerge from the show which runs till the 13th.

There was talk of a possible iMac mini duly altered to run as an Apple media centre in the home.  I am hoping for something like that one day.  Let’s see what happens in the next few days.  Then again, something like that may come in a few months time.  For now, isn’t this a lot of awesome stuff?

I am still a bit pissed off.  Real gadget envy kind of pissed off!

Update:

MacWorld (the magazine website) has published some more info on the new MacBook Pro and the new iMac Core Duo that is worth reading.
