Going back to school

I am excited to announce that the University of the Witwatersrand is in the process of appointing me as a part-time lecturer and tutor at its Law School.  I have established a blawg (that’s a fancy term for a law orientated blog) for the benefit of my students.  My subjects for the time being will be Foundations (Roman law) and Civil Procedure.  The blog will contain information relevant to the material I will be teaching/tutoring and may even be of interest to you.

Ultimately I believe this part-time appointment will serve to further improve our overall quality of service to our clients and the content on this site.

Firefly season 2 available for download on iTunes Music Store?

Ken

It could happen!  According to Mac OS Ken, a crusade is underway to bring this fantastic series back for a second season and to make it available for download or directly on DVD.  Fans worldwide were really disappointed when the show came to an end after just one season.  Thankfully it made a return in the form of a full length film titled “Serenity” recently (although we were disappointed to learn it went straight to DVD here in South Africa).  Anyway, here is the actual story:

I told you yesterday about a couple of analysts who say TV shows can generate more money per viewer for networks through digital download than through traditional ad driven broadcasts… but what about a show without a network?

Hope springs eternal for fans of Firefly… SciFi.com reports on one man’s crusade to bring the show back from the dead… for digital download and DVD sales.

Entrepreneur Ace Underhill – and yes… that is said to be his real name – has said he’s trying to acquire the rights to the Sci Fi franchise to produce a second season to be distributed in alternative media.

One possible hitch… Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon says… he’s never heard of the guy.

Underhill says he has contacted Whedon’s representatives, as well as executives at 20th Century Fox Televison, which owns the TV rights to the show… though he has not spoke to Whedon directly.

Underhill says at this point, the chance of a second season is a long shot, but the chance exists… and he plans to be in it for the long haul.

SA Top Site and SA Top Sites now owned by the same person

Some in the South African Blogosphere are aware that there were, until recently, two websites dedicated to rankings of South African sites.  Justin Hartman of SA Top Sites fame has just announced that he has purchased the domain name of his competitor, SA TopSites (it does get a little confusing):

I am very pleased to announce that I have successfully managed to secure a deal with the previous owners of SA Top Sites and as of yesterday (25 January 2006) I now own the old SA Top Sites domains, www.satopsite.co.za and www.satopsites.co.za

I was approached by the owners to buy the domains from them and I was very pleased that we could agree on an amicable figure that suited both parties.

Previous members of SA Top Sites, assuming they still have their code on their web pages, will now see a button asking them to “upgrade their account?? to the new improved version. I’m hoping that I can get those 380+ members to upgrade to the new version as I believe it creates greater value and credibility if there are many members subscribed to the free service.

This is a big step in the right direction and I’m a very chuffed person indeed!

Justin Hartman is also the guy behind Hartman Productions, a web solutions company which has some useful tools you can use to analyse things like the suitability of your existing meta tags and suchlike.

The wireless iTunes powered home

200601251633

I knew, when I bought my Airport Express, that I could broadcast music throughout my home.  Well, I knew that it could be done in theory at any rate.  It was great to know that it could be done but given that I don’t have anything set up to enable me to actually do this, I left it at that.  Anyway, the iPod blog has a great post with a great guide to making this all possible.  Now all I need to do is save up and buy the sound system that enables all this …

A what of puppies?

IMGP1626.JPG

G made an excellent point the other day.  We should not refer to a “litter” of puppies.  It is far more accurate and descriptive to refer to a “silliness” of puppies.  Makes perfect sense if you think about it … or if you actually have puppies.
