Feed aggregators for MovableType

I don’t suppose anyone can point me in the direction of a good feed aggregator that I can add to the sidebar of a MovableType blog?  I know about Feed.app which has been quite highly rated.  The only thing is that it can be pretty pricey especially when used on a commercial site.

Upgrade update

As you can see we have successfully completed our upgrade to our website.  There will still be many changes on an ongoing basis as we customise the site’s design and improve it even more.

A big “thank you” to Mladen at Wizardworx for working late into the night to help us make this transition.  Jacobson Attorneys is hosted by Wizardworx because of the amazing service we receive from them!

We hope to have news feeds back up fairly soon.  On that note, we have had to change our feed address.  Hopefully this change will only last about a month and became necessary given the change back to this server.  For the time being our feed address is now http://www.feedburner.com/JAttorneys/.  We apologise for the hassle this may cause you and we’ll let you know if and when we can change this back to http://www.feedburner.com/JacobsonAttorneys/.

In the meantime, please take a look around and let us know what you think of the new site.  If there are any features you would like to see added, let us know.

As you can see, our site upgrade is well on its way. We will be making a number of changes to the existing templates so expect a number of changes. In the meantime, please feel free to visit our temporary site for old articles and news feeds.

Supreme Court of Appeal

We have a number of different courts in our court structure.  The highest court in South Africa for all matters except for constitutional matters is the Supreme Court of Appeal.  Here is some information about this court from its website:

All constitutional matters are dealt with by the Constitutional Court, the highest court in the land, which is situated in Johannesburg.

The Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, the successor of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Courts of South Africa was created by the Constitution of 1996. According to the Constitution -

    * it functions only as a court of appeal

    * it may decide any matter on appeal and,

    * it is except for constitutional matters, the highest court of appeal

It is composed of the President and Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal and a number of judges of appeal determined by an Act of Parliament. The Supreme Court of Appeal has jurisdiction to hear and determine an appeal against any decision of a High Court.

Decisions of the Supreme Court of Appeal are binding on all courts of a lower order, and the decisions of the High Courts are binding on Magistrates’ Courts within the respective areas of jurisdiction of the divisions.

Whereas previously the head of the Appellate Division was the chief justice, this is no longer the case. The Chief Justice of South Africa is now located in the Constitutional Court.

The seat of the Supreme Court of Appeal is at Bloemfontein. Provision exists for a session of the court at some other place when by reason of exceptional circumstances it is expedient to hold its sitting there. Its process runs throughout the Republic and its judgments and orders have effect and are executed in the areas of other divisions as if they were original judgments or orders of these divisions.

The Court sits in panels of five or three Judges, depending on the nature of the appeal. The composition of the panels differ for each case. The senior judge on each panel presides in that case and decides which judge is to write the judgment (or opinion) of the court. There may be more than one judgment in each case if there is a difference of opinion. The decision of the majority is the decision of the Court. Judges and counsel are robed in court.

If you are interested in some of the other courts in our court system, here are some informative links:

Aargh!

I have spent the last 20 minutes trying to get Word for Mac to stop setting every level 2 paragraph to a heading!  Every time I set a normal paragraph to a level 2 numbered paragraph the stupid software seizes on it and makes it a heading.  To aggravate matters, OpenOffice.org 2.0 is not available for Mac yet so I can’t even finish my document in that.

Ok, rant over.  Still irked though.

First same-sex marriages in the UK

Here is some good news coming out of Northern Ireland.  According to the BBC -

The first set of civil partnership ceremonies for gay couples in the UK are being held in Northern Ireland. Two women, Shannon Sickles and Grainne Close, exchanged vows at Belfast City Hall, followed by a gay couple. Another lesbian couple will do so later. The new Civil Partnership Act provides same-sex couples with similar legal rights to married couples. The first ceremonies in Scotland will take place on Tuesday, and in England and Wales on Wednesday.

Hopefully it won’t be much longer before we see the same news in our papers.Technorati Tags: ,

A very PC greeting for this time of year …

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally-conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter/summer solstice holiday, practised within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all AND a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our society (not to imply that my society is necessarily greater than any other society or is the only society of its sort in the world), and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or sexual preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal.

For more, read the full article on IOL.  It is really funny and at the same time, an indictment of our increasing desire not to offend anyone at the risk of becoming more and more obscure.
