Telkom!! It is just crazy!

It is becoming boring ranting about Telkom. Once they again Telkom is up to no good. The rumoured price changes are coming into effect (most likely) and the hardest hit are small and medium businesses and people who use more than a few GB bandwidth a month. Those of you overseas (Europe/North America/Asia) may find this bizarre but we have bandwidth caps and our highest ’speed’ connection is a whopping 1Mbps connection limited by caps on how much bandwidth we can use.

I am not going to bother trying to rehash the story. I am just pissed off at how evil Telkom can be and how our government just lets Telkom get away with anything with just a few rumblings about cracking down on our enormously high bandwidth costs. I feel ill when I think about how callous Telkom and government are. They know this type of service is essential for small and medium businesses because it gives us a leg up and helps us compete that much more effectively. At the end of the day we can do little more than wait for the second national operator to go online and start offering a competing service. The sad thing is that when that happens, Telkom will be sure to drop their prices dramatically.

To get the full picture, take a look at the following sites:

To give you another example of how Telkom operates, take a look at this email exchange that apparently took place this last month between a user and a Telkom product manager:

With all the rumors etc around, it might be a good thing if Telkom can inform their subscribers what is going to happen on the 1st of November 2005, since some ISPs have informed their subscribers.

Can you please let us know what’s going on

I got this response:

Subject: RE: ADSL Capping

Morning Bladebla

Thanks for the e-mail and first off no need to panic just yet

From 1 November the ISP’s move to usage based service, not necessarily the subscribers, if that makes sense to you. What happened is there is a group of ISP’s out there that took the same 3 Gig service we sell and sold it as 30 Gig service. So we don’t really have a problem with the vast majority of our DSL users, as they bought a 2, 3 or 4 Gig service and for most of them, stay within that limit.

We will be moving to a usage model as there is a large demand for more than the current Gig offering. I assure U that as soon as we have buttoned down our strategy, our subscribers will be the first to be informed. On the other hand if U are one of those subscribers that is running at over a 100 Gigs a month, U will be getting a mail from us sooner than later

Warm regards

A petition has been set up at http://www.adslpetition.co.za/.  I hope this counts for something although I despair at times like this. If you use ADSL in South Africa, sign the petition. Support every effort to bring Telkom to its senses or to its knees. A monopoly that abuses its position like this shouldn’t be allowed to thrive.

A roll of newspaper as a puppy training tool

Since we are very much in puppy mode, this piece of information G found on the Web is most useful.  I think it is fair to say that rolled up newspaper is somewhat dubious as a puppy training tool.  I think this piece settles this debate once and for all and confirms the tremendous value of rolled up newspaper as a tool for training puppies:

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly.
For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident.
Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess),
Then take the rolled-up newspaper…
And hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,

“I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG; I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Check your traffic warrants online

Those of us who have heard the horror stories about Metro Police arresting people at road blocks for their failure to pay traffic fines

now have a measure of comfort (if you live in Joburg). ITWeb has reported as follows:

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has created a Web site to allow motorists to check if they have outstanding

traffic fines.

The site, part of the Joburg http://eservices.joburg.org.za/joburg/eservices/ will help motorists access information regarding outstanding warrants and summons. The site follows the creation of a mobile fine system.

The JMPD is also planning to add an online fine payment system on the site to help offenders to make immediate payments.

The City of Johannesburg’s strategy is to promote technology-driven crime prevention and ensure the department’s bylaw

enforcement system meets global standards,” says JMPD director Derek Masoek.

“The JMPD partnered with 2Big Mobile Applications, a black economic empowerment company, to develop the Web facility. The Web site forms part of 2Big’s Mobile Integrated Information System five-part project that piloted in 2003.

During the first phase of the project, officers accessed relevant information via cellphone by entering a car’s registration

number. In the second phase, a management system was introduced to track the officers’ daily activities. The third phase, announced in September, is a mobile traffic fine system.

The JMPD has also established an offender notification contact centre, staffed with six operators.

To use the site you have to register on the site first and it seems that you can also access rates and taxes info from this site too.

I took the site for a spin.  You have to register on the site first and it seems that you can also access rates and taxes info from this site too.  Thankfully I don’t have any outstanding warrants (the service only really covers outstanding warrants, not the fine you just got for speeding on the freeway) and the City knows exactly where I am for future reference …

A number of people have been posting ID numbers in the comments to this post. This is a very bad idea! You are compromising your security. Also, I am not the online service you use to check for fines. Please either go to the site I mention in this post or look at a site like Payfine.

Our family has grown!

Bandit_salami_in_their_new_homeG and I have extended our humble family.  We have just adopted two miniature Dachshund puppies, Salami and Bandit.  Here they are, sleeping peacefully!  Nice thing about having two puppies is that they pretty much entertain themselves.  There are more photo’s in my Flickr photostream.

Initially we just took Salami (the little girl) and she had a tough time on her own so when we found out that the one little boy was available, we grabbed him too and the two of them are much happier together.
