Have you switched?

Apple computers and gadgets seem to be more popular in South Africa than they were a couple years ago.  It seems to me that this has quite a bit to do with the immensely popular iPod and its variations.  I came across a post on Home Office Lawyer which asks "why have you not switched" to an Apple in your office?

I have been an Apple fan since I realised how cool Apple computers look a couple years ago.  One of the perceived problems with switching to an Apple is that you may find that your existing files from your PC don’t work on your new Apple and that creates a whole new nightmare that swiftly erodes any infatuation with the Apple brand.  While this used to be the case, a walk through an Apple shop reveals that most of the commonly used software packages have Apple versions (for example, Microsoft Office).

To add to this, the cost of an Apple computer (whether it be a laptop or a desktop) has dropped to the point where it becomes feasible to consider an Apple as an alternative to a PC.  For my part, I have had my eye on an Apple G4 laptop.

Introducing … my business

Well, I have finally put up a site for my new law firm that looks pretty decent.  I am actually quite pleased how it turned out.  Take a look for yourself.

For those of you who are interested, I went with a Drupal installation and it proved to be a pretty easy CMS to setup and configure.  I am still a little new at it all but there it is.

Paris gives kids drugs and booze

This girl just doesn’t seem to be able to do anything without some controversy …

IMDB and The Celebrity Blog have reported on her latest controversy:

Socialite Paris Hilton is at the center of a Maryland police investigation after information leaked to the authorities claims she has allegedly offered teenagers drugs and alcohol. Baltimore Police officials have confirmed they’re taking the reports very seriously, adding Hilton could face a hefty fine and jail time if she’s found guilty. The allegations stem from an episode of reality show The Simple Life: Interns, when Hilton reportedly offered teens marijuana and bourbon to "loosen them up" for a taped segment. One of the teens involved has told police, "She loaded myself and two other underage kids on shots of Jack Daniels to loosen us up for the show." Baltimore Police Detective Chris Schaeffer tells US tabloid the National Enquirer, "These are serious allegations. We will certainly be investigating them." A spokesman for 20th Century Fox - the company behind The Simple Life - insists the allegations are false: "Paris would never endanger the welfare of a minor."

Reporting from the front

Wow!  I am almost two months into my new life as a self-employed dude and proprietor of my very own law firm.  When I think back to my life before my move it is as if I am remembering a very unfortunate dream.  When I drive past my old place of work I look up at my old office and wait for the flood of emotions that never comes.  All I see now is the lost potential for something that could have been great.

Supes_downcast_1Besides my new role of ronin roaming the legal landscape (yup, despite all my previous intentions I am still a lawyer and actually enjoying it) I have adopted the role of protector of the weak and defender against the forces of evil in our corporate environment.  I am sitting at my desk in my home office working through files and notes all over my desk preparing for an onslaught tomorrow which has a predetermined outcome and yet remains a process we must go through.  Funny thing about legal processes (funny strange, not funny ha ha) is that you often have to go through the motions simply to lay the groundwork for what follows.  In a way it becomes an almost ritualised form of combat and there is always some opponent who comes at you all ninja-style under cover of darkness using the rules in a very underhanded way.  Transparency and honesty are not always your friends in this arena - not many lawyers will fight honourably.  Anyway, back to work.
