Splik … *

I have had such a hectic week this week.  My boss is away next week and, as with any boss about to go on leave, the week before is always a nightmare so I haven’t had much chance to blog much.  I hope to back in form in a bit … whenever that is.  ;-)

Why do we meet people?

Do you ever meet someone and seem to get along really well only to find that in the ensuing months that friendship languishes and never really comes into its own?  For some reason you just don’t connect again and it becomes an occasional thing?

I believe everything in our lives happens for a reason and that we are presented with seemingly infinite opportunities in all areas of our lives (also known as "choices").  Ultimately everything in our lives has significance and meaning and yet there are relationships with don’t seem to have much significance at all and become ghosts of relationships that could have been.  I just don’t understand it.

Any thoughts?

New South African Deputy President announced

GetpicFollowing the departure of former Deputy President Jacob Zuma from office last week, President Thabo Mbeki has named our new Deputy President.  Our new Deputy President is former Minister of Minerals and Energy, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

I was a little surprised as I had bought into the rumours about other cabinet ministers who were said to be next in line.  That being said, I think it is a great sign that our new Deputy President is a woman.  Could she be our next President?  President Mbeki made the following welcome comment:

"We thought that this gave us an opportunity further to strengthen the participation of women in the executive," Mbeki said.

Here is an interesting tidbit (also from IOL):

Mlambo-Ngcuka is married to former chief prosecutor Bulelani Ngcuka, who launched the case against Zuma when he announced in 2003 that there was a "prima facie" corruption case against the deputy president.

Ngcuka did not bring charges at the time, saying the case would be unwinnable in court.

But following the conviction of Zuma’s former financial adviser Schabir Shaik this month, prosecutors announced they would be bringing formal charges against Zuma.

Mermaids

MermaidSo why do mermaids wear seashells?

Well, because "D" shells are too big and "B" shells are too small!

(Thanks G!  Love this one)

The Bat is back!

Bat1I am really looking forward to the release of "Batman Begins" here next week.  I like the look of this prequel, it seems to be return to the very gothic look that characterised Batman until Joel Schumacher really fudged it completely with "Batman and Robin" and "Batman Forever" and his need to make the movies look like a comic book.

From the few reviews I have read, "Batman Begins" is not the best movie ever (not as good as the X-Men movies or Spiderman movies) but goes a long way to restoring respect to the DC Comics movie franchise.  Next up, let’s see what "Superman Returns" is like in a year or so.  That, to me, will be the big determining factor for how I view DC Comics movies going forward.
