Nokia 6630

Since my earlier post I did a little digging around and it seems that the Nokia 6630 is an excellent phone.  It is basically a pretty good upgrade on the Nokia 6600 with a whole host of new and improved features.

Infosync World gave this phone an excellent review.  They gave it 89% which is the highest score I have seen for a phone they have reviewed for a long time.  The smartphones they review tend to receive mediocre scores.  The only other phone to come close is the Nokia 6600 which received a score of 84%.

Engadget was also pretty excited about this phone in their post titled "One reason we can’t wait for 3G to take off in the US".  This phone is due to arrive in our stores in February so I think I will have a good look at this one and seriously consider it to replace my 6600.

Update:
It turns out that this phone is available locally so I am going to get myself one.  I can get it on upgrade and it will only cost me about R319 (about $54) which isn’t too bad.  I am waiting for a guy from the phone store to get back to me with a list of what comes in the box.  I understand that the phone is meant to come with a USB cable and this would be essential to synchronise my PC with the phone mainly because I can’t get the phone and PC talking over my Bluetooth adaptor.

MMC card update:

I have noticed that there is some concern about the memory cards for the Nokia 6630.  There is some info for you here, if you are looking for that.

If you are interested, the feature list from the Nokia site has been reproduced below:

    Nokia 6630 experience

I am really impressed with my new Nokia 6630. I got it about a week and a bit ago and I have loved using it. I have probably used it a bit to much and my next phone bill will probably be a bit pricey. As promised, I have set out my thoughts on this …

  13. Paul says:

    Hi Stamatakis and Jaggy

It looks like there is definitely an issue with the memory cards that affects the cards supplied (I assume the cards you have problems with are the ones you got in the box?). I don't know why there is a problem. Could it be a bad batch or poor quality cards?

I agree that it is silly that Nokia is using such a specific and closed standard for their otherwise amazing phones.

    Hi Ismail

I imagine you would have to have the 6630 to use its software. Otherwise, try 3rd party software for the 6600 (start with http://www.handango.com – be sure to select software for your phone) which may do the same thing. Hope this helps!

  25. Paul says:

    Hi Ypatia

I am not sure what the cause of the problem is. I don’t know of software which could calibrate the phone and which you could download and run yourself. I have found that my phone also just turns itself off when I am using a Bluetooth headset. Perhaps you may also be running certain 3rd party apps which are clashing with something on your phone.

As for programs running slowly, do you run many apps at the same time? You can tell how many are running at a time by holding down the ‘menu’ button. Try closing some of the apps you are not using.

Other than that, visit your local Nokia dealership and see if they can help you out. Sorry I couldn’t be much more help.

Hi everyone I haven’t responded to yet. I must just point out that I am not a Nokia technician so I can’t really answer all of your questions about faults. What I do suggest, if you continue to experience faults, is to go to your local Nokia repair centre and get the technicians to check your phone out properly.

As for phones doing what TV ads show, bear in mind that TV ads often misrepresent what the phones can actually do, to a degree, so don’t expect your phone to do exactly what the ad says it can do.

    Hi Shaz

I am sorry to hear you are having such problems with your phone. I have been fortunate to have very few hassles with my phone. I think that people who are having problems with their phones really should take them back and get the local Nokia guys to sort the problem out. These phones really are awesome, when they work properly. It really puts me off Nokia phones to hear about all these problems people are experiencing with otherwise awesome phones.
